Small Bathroom Planning – What You Need To Know

Remodeling your small bathroom involves proper planning and designing. Since you’re working with very limited space, you have to be very careful about all aspects that can make or break the change. It may help to get some expert and professional advice. You can also independently orient yourself with the technical and aesthetic details to get the right layout that suits you.

Depending on the scope of your project, you may need to submit a formal and detailed plan of your small bathroom to be approved and given a building permit. You can research on the internet or visit the local building office to determine certain specifications, standards and requirements that may apply with regards to your project.

You need to consider all features in the bathroom to widen space. Choosing the right fixtures and furniture such as pedestal or wall-mounted sinks, hanging cabinets and sliding shower doors will help in maximizing floor, counter and storage space. There may be some changes that you can do to doors, windows, walls and the ceiling to allow more light and space.

It is equally important to consider smaller details that can disrupt the appearance and balance of the small bathroom. Too many items placed on counter space can lead to clutter giving the bathroom a cramped appearance. Light fixtures, mirrors and decorations should compliment the room well in order to provide the illusion of a larger space. Bright lights in corners and cabinets are recommended for efficiency. Tall and wide mirrors are also ideal to expand the appearance. Decorations and other small details like door knobs, cabinet pulls or handles and window treatments should be chosen carefully. Light-colored window treatments using thin fabric are preferred. For other items, materials like glass and steel are also good.

In your small bathroom plan, it is also important to consider mechanical and electrical systems for maximum safety and efficiency. Ideally, water supply, waste and vent pipes should be located in one wall which makes repairs easier. Electrical outlets and switches should be strategically placed so that all people can conveniently do their bathroom activities.
